7-Foot-2 Barbie Doll Helps Demonstrate
Eating Disorders
National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is February 26 - March 4
(Note the use of the
date in the sub-head. It helps flag the media to the timeliness
of the story.)
If Barbie were a human being, she’d be 7
feet, 2 inches tall with measurements of
42-26-28.
(Compelling
lead sentence to pull in the reader.)
Yet millions of little girls grow up dreaming about having a figure just
like Barbie’s. And in the process, many of them end up with eating
disorders. Dr. Laura Lees, a Wauwatosa clinical psychologist, uses her
life-size Barbie doll—an exact replica of the Barbie doll’s
dimensions—to demonstrate how body image problems put children and
adolescents at risk for dangerous dieting practices and eating
disorders.
(Note how this explains the problem and the
solution.)
“The big Barbie is an exact replica of an actual Barbie doll's
dimensions that have been extrapolated to human size,” said Dr. Lees,
who takes the doll on the public-speaking circuit and uses it in many of
her classes. “It’s a great visual way to address the topic of eating
disorders and prevention in a non-threatening way.”
National Eating
Disorder Awareness Week is February 27 - March 5. Dr. Lees, an eating
disorders expert who owns Lees Psychological Services, Inc., was
recognized in the February 2001 issue of Milwaukee Magazine's cover
story "A Guide to Top Psychotherapists."
(Gives her
credibility.)
